Artist: Ernest Papps

Born in England Ernest Papps came to New Zealand in 1955 settling in Wellington where he worked as a commercial artist. During this time Ernest would spend his weekends exploring the bush or roaming the streets of Wellington “dashing off watercolours”. Ernest also found work as a free-lance illustrator. His illustrative work will be well known to generations of New Zealand children who grew up reading the hugely successful Price Milburn School Readers. Ernest illustrated more than 100 titles.Since moving to Otaki in 1972 Ernest has been a full time artist.

A keen nature lover and tramper Ernest’s oil paintings draw on the classical and traditional techniques of the old masters and are inspired by the light and colour of the New Zealand landscape. From the hills and beaches of the Kapiti Coast to the Whanganui River valley and the West Coast of the South Island, Ernest has spent the past fifty-five years capturing New Zealand’s awesome and diverse scenery on canvas.Fascinated by the history and isolation of New Zealand pioneering life, stage coaches, gold miners and settlers have also been the subject of many of Ernest’s paintings. “What” he asks “could be more romantic than an old prospector following his dream”. Ernest’s work unashamedly celebrates New Zealand landscape, history and culture.

I’ve loved animals for as long as I remember, knowing at a very young age that I could not bring myself to eat them, despite growing up in a regular meat and veg family. I dream of someday living self-sustained in the country-side with my own sanctuary. I’m a passionate animal advocate who helps to make a difference every day working as the Visual Communications Manager at SAFE. In my spare time, I dabble in art and illustration.

When I went to Black Sheep last year, I absolutely fell in love. Each animal had such character and their happiness and love for their safe environment was clearly visible. While I made friends with most of them, I found myself frequently sneaking around the corner to visit a very old cat, named Nanna Cat. At first, I was unsure whether this little cat was after attention at all – her face seemed angry and she looked at peace basking in the sun – but as soon as I reached out to pat her, she ‘head butted’ my hand and flopped over for more.

“Nanna Cat came to us in 2011 as a very old cat under threat of being shot. She spent her remaining days with us helping to foster and socialise wild kittens and being the boss of the house! With just two teeth and a huge attitude she stole every ones hearts! We never knew her exact age so stopped when we thought she was 21years old, so she will be forever 21!

Sadly lovely Nanna cat died last winter (2016) after a decline in liver and kidney health. Rest in Peace Nanna.”

stop stressing ‘bout what happens next

it hasn’t happened yet

take a second to be present,

be effervescent

accept what you’re bereft of

it’s fine, don’t question it

pick up where you left off

from right there where you left it

when I did,

I found that love was all that I was left with

I caressed instead of holding

and dissolved into atoms

so when you’re fed up and you’ve had enough

check the edges of your spectrum

and bend your perspective

like a parabola.

Jennifer is currently enjoying working at Charles Fleming in the Serviced Apartments. Art is a passion that Jennifer loves to share through tutoring. She has taught Painting to Adults via Community Education and privately for 15 years and at the same time Secondary for 9 years."I don't have a specific genre and this is because I love to capture the essence of just about anything I see and have experienced. Perhaps this is largely due to being influenced by my students - who were all unique in subject matter and style. I enjoy tutoring so students gain the skills necessary to further explore their own Art Practice independently. I exhibited mostly at The Suter Art Gallery and World of Wearable Art Museum in Nelson, until I moved to the North Island approximately 2 years ago. I am currently in the process of doing up my railway cottage in Otaki so I can look forward to tutoring again from home".

Artist: Antonio Gonzalez

Antonio was born in Mexico City. Since a very early age he has been in touch with the city 'street' way of life and that of the indigenous cultures of his country. These experiences are reflective in his paintings, portraying Mexican symbols in a playful and at times sarcastic way, evoking Mexican humour. His art is not only displayed on canvas and wood, but also on the human body; Antonio is a skilled tattooist, using ink on skin to create striking designs that reflect the inspiration of his culture.

He has held exhibitions in Zurich, Spain, throughout Mexico, and an inspiring collective exhibition in the Mexico City subway. Antonio has held several exhibitions in NZ, where he now lives.
